Madurodam is a miniature city located in Scheveningen, The Hague, in the Netherlands. It is a model of a Dutch town on a 1:25 scale, composed of typical Dutch buildings and landmarks, as are found at various locations in the country. This major Dutch tourist attraction was built in 1952 and has been visited by tens of millions of visitors since then. The miniature city was named after George Maduro, a law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces as a member of the Dutch resistance and died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945. His parents donated the money to start the Madurodam project.

On July 2, 1952, teen aged princess Beatrix was appointed mayor of Madurodam, after which she was given a tour of her town. When Beatrix became queen of the Netherlands, she laid down this function. Today, the mayor of Madurodam is elected by a youth municipal council consisting of 25 pupils from schools in the region. [wikipedia]

Also known as the Millennium Wheel, the structure stands 135 metres (443 feet) high on the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England, between Westminster and Hungerford Bridges. Marineland in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA was a major “Sea World” type attraction, until it was bought by the owners of Sea World in 1986, and shut down. It was the original home of the first “Shamu.” In its decaying state it has been film location for various mivies including Charlies Angels, Conair, and FaceOff.

The Church of God’s Prophecy built Fields of the Wood in 1945 in Murphy, NC. The centerpiece of this Christian theme park is the 300 foot wide copy of the ten commandments with the words spelled out in five foot tall letters.

This is a defunct theme park in Kissimmee, Florida that was once owned and operated by China Travel Service (a government-run travel agency). It opened in 1993 to mixed reviews (wonderful landscaping and displays; too many protesters). It never managed to attract many visitors, and only hosted minimal crowds (the admission price was pretty high). The park president attempted to sell the attraction in 2000, but was recalled to China and placed under house arrect. Splendid China closed at the end of 2003, and was was purchased by a developer in 2005. [wikipedia link]
